How to Get the Best Background Removal Results
Distance eliminates the shadow your body casts onto the background. This is the single biggest factor for clean AI removal.
Face a window — do not stand with the window behind you. Natural diffused light produces even lighting with no harsh shadows on your face.
White shirt against white background confuses the edge detector. Wear any dark or colored solid top for a clean separation.
The front camera is lower resolution. Have someone take the photo from arm's length with your rear camera for the clearest result.

What background color is required for a US passport photo?
US passport photos must have a plain white or off-white background with no patterns, textures, or shadows. The background must be uniform — no gradients, no objects behind you, no colored walls. The US State Department rejects photos with any non-white background, including cream, gray, light blue, or anything that is not close to pure white.
Can I change my passport photo background online?

What if there are shadows on my background?

If strong shadows remain after processing, you can retake the photo — stand away from any wall (at least 3 feet) and use soft, indirect lighting to minimize shadows before uploading.
Can I change the background to any color, or only white?
For US passport and visa applications, the background must be white. Our tool replaces your background with regulation-compliant white. Some countries (Canada, UK, Australia) allow off-white or light gray — for those documents, the white we produce still meets requirements. We do not offer red, blue, or other colors because no major government passport accepts them.
Does changing the background affect photo quality?
No. The AI processes the image at full resolution. The final download is 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI — the same quality as the original photo in terms of resolution. If your original photo is high quality, the output will be high quality. If your original is blurry or low-resolution, no background change will improve that.
What photos work best for AI background removal?
The best photos have high contrast between subject and background. Ideal: stand 3 feet from a light wall, use soft natural light from a window, and avoid wearing white or very light clothing (which can blend into the background). Avoid strong shadows behind you. Any smartphone rear camera photo taken in these conditions gives excellent AI removal results.
