How to Create a White Background at Home

You don't need a studio. Here are the best DIY setups in order of quality.

Best
White foam board

Buy a 20×30 inch white foam board ($1–2 at dollar stores). Tape it to a wall. Stand 2–3 feet in front. Even, bright, guaranteed white.

Great
White door

A white interior door works well. Make sure there are no visible door handles, panels, or frames in the frame. Close the door flat.

Good
White sheet on wall

Tape a white bedsheet or pillowcase to a wall. Make sure it's smooth — wrinkles cast shadows. Pull taut before taping.

Good
White copy paper

For a solo shot, tape several sheets of white copy paper together into a large panel. Works well if the photo tightly frames your head and shoulders.

Avoid
Light-colored wall

Off-white, cream, or light grey walls are often too colored for a US passport. Lighting can make them look different in photos. Test and verify before submitting.

Why Shadows Cause Rejection

Even a perfectly white wall becomes non-compliant if there's a shadow on it. Shadow is treated the same as a non-white background — it creates an uneven background that the system flags.

Standing too close to wall
Move 2–3 feet away from the background
Single strong light source
Use diffused light from both sides, or window light
Flash at wrong angle
Turn off flash — use natural or ambient light
Overhead lighting only
Add a second light source in front of you

Note

The safest background choice for any country is plain white. If you use it for a US passport photo and later need a UK passport, white is accepted there too. You'll never be wrong with white.

FAQ

What color background is required for a US passport photo?

The US State Department requires a plain white or off-white background. No patterns, textures, shadows, or objects should be visible in the background. The background must be evenly lit — dark backgrounds, light grey, or cream shades are not acceptable for a US passport photo.

Can a passport photo background be grey?

It depends on the country. For US passports, no — only white or off-white is accepted. The UK accepts light grey or plain cream backgrounds. Canada requires white only. If you're applying for a UK passport or Schengen visa, check whether grey is permitted for that specific document.

What is a 'plain' background for a passport photo?

Plain means: single solid color, no patterns, no textures visible, no furniture or objects in frame, no shadows falling on the background. The background must be uniform from edge to edge. A sheet of white copy paper taped to a wall qualifies — a patterned wallpaper, a door with visible panels, or a curtain do not.

Can I use a blue background for a passport photo?

Only for specific countries. India traditionally used a white background with a blue highlight effect in older requirements, though modern Indian passports now require plain white. Most countries — US, UK, Canada, Australia, Schengen — require white or near-white. A blue background is not accepted for US, UK, or Canadian passports.

Why do passport photos need a white background?

White and near-white backgrounds are required because they provide maximum contrast for facial recognition algorithms. The biometric system needs to clearly separate the face from the background to detect and measure facial landmarks. Colored or patterned backgrounds reduce this contrast and can cause matching errors.

What if my home background isn't perfectly white?

Use a white foam board (available at dollar stores or office supply stores), a white sheet of paper taped to a wall, or a white door as your backdrop. Stand 2–3 feet in front of it to avoid casting shadows. Our tool can make minor adjustments to very slightly off-white backgrounds, but heavily colored or shadowed backgrounds need to be retaken.

Can I digitally change my passport photo background to white?

Officially, no. The State Department requires the original background — not a digitally replaced one. AI background removal tools create altered photos, which are not compliant. In practice, minor corrections to match white-balance are tolerated, but full background replacement is technically not permitted and may be detected.

Warning

Do not digitally replace your background with white using AI tools. The US State Department explicitly prohibits altered photos. Physically set up a white background before taking the photo.
