The 2×2 inch dimension is just the start. The State Department has precise rules for every aspect of the photo.
How to Measure Your Passport Photo
If you already have a photo and want to verify it is the right size before submitting.
For US passports: measure width and height with a ruler. Both must be exactly 2 inches (51mm). Any deviation — even 1/16 inch — can cause rejection at an acceptance facility.
Hold a ruler against the photo and measure from the bottom of the chin to the top of the crown (not the top of the hair). It must fall between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches for US photos.
For US online passport renewal: the file must be JPEG format, at least 600×600 pixels, and under 240KB. Right-click the file → Properties to check pixel dimensions and file size.
Upload any photo to our tool. We check dimensions, head position, background compliance, and generate a print-ready file at exactly the right size.

There is no single global standard. The most common sizes are: 2×2 inches (51×51mm) — used by the US, Philippines, Nigeria, and Ghana; 35×45mm (1.38×1.77 in) — used by the UK, all 26 Schengen countries, India, Australia, and most of the world; and 50×70mm (1.97×2.76 in) — used exclusively by Canada.
What is the passport photo size in pixels?
At 300 DPI (standard print resolution): US 2×2 inches = 600×600 pixels. UK/EU 35×45mm = 413×531 pixels. Canada 50×70mm = 591×827 pixels. For online submissions the minimum is typically 600×600 pixels for US applications.

What size is a passport photo in cm?
US: 5.1×5.1cm. UK/EU/India/Australia: 3.5×4.5cm. Canada: 5×7cm. These are the three most common formats — the vast majority of countries use one of these three sizes.
How big should the head be in a passport photo?
For a US 2×2 inch passport photo, the head (chin to crown) must measure between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches (25mm–35mm), occupying 50–70% of the photo height. The eyes should be positioned between 1⅛ and 1⅜ inches from the bottom edge of the photo.
Is a 2×2 photo the same as passport size?
In the United States, yes — 2×2 inches is the official US passport photo size. However, globally 'passport size' means different things. In the UK, passport size is 35×45mm (rectangular). In Canada it is 50×70mm. The 2×2 inch format is the US standard, not a worldwide universal size.
How many pixels is a 2×2 passport photo?
A 2×2 inch photo at 300 DPI is 600×600 pixels. At 200 DPI it is 400×400 pixels. For US passport applications submitted by mail, the print must be 2×2 inches at minimum 300 DPI. For the online US passport renewal system (DS-82), the minimum file upload is 600×600 pixels.
What is 35×45mm in inches?
35×45mm equals approximately 1.38 inches wide by 1.77 inches tall. This is the UK passport photo size, used by all 26 Schengen countries, India, Australia, New Zealand, and most of the world outside North America. It is a rectangular portrait format — not square like the US 2×2 inch format.
