How Many Passport Photos Do You Need?

How many passport photos you need depends on the form. A US passport application needs 1. Most USCIS forms that ask for photos, including the I-485 green card application, the I-765 work permit and the I-131 travel document, need 2 identical photos each. An N-400 filed from inside the US needs none, and an online passport renewal, a DS-160 visa application or a DV lottery entry takes a digital file instead of prints.

Every count below comes from the official form instructions, linked in the table and checked on October 23, 2026.

The USCIS photo spec

The I-485, I-765, I-131 and N-400 instructions use the same wording: 2 × 2 inches, white to off-white background, printed on thin paper with a glossy finish, unmounted and unretouched, head 1 to 1⅜ inches from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, and your name and A-Number (if any) lightly printed on the back in pencil or felt pen. Details on our green card photo requirements and Form I-485 photo pages.

Filing Several USCIS Forms Together? Count 2 per Form

Each USCIS form that asks for photos wants its own pair. The I-485, I-765 and I-131 instructions each say: “You must submit two identical color passport-style photographs of yourself taken recently.” A common adjustment-of-status package adds up like this:

What you filePhotos
I-485 only2
I-485 + I-7654
I-485 + I-765 + I-1316
I-130 for a spouse2 of the petitioner + 2 of the spouse (if in the US), taken within 30 days of filing

Copies of one photo are fine across forms: each form asks for two identical photos taken recently, and none of these instructions asks for a different photo per form. What you can't do is share one pair between two forms. A spouse or child who files their own I-485 needs their own set. For the spouse petition, see our Form I-130 photo page.

With our tool you make the photo once. On the download page, choose the 2-photo layout: each 4 × 6 print then holds two 2 × 2 inch copies, which is one form's pair. For the I-485, I-765 and I-131, print it three times.

When You Don't Need a Printed Photo

Four common applications take no prints, or none from most people.

  • US passport renewal online

You upload a digital photo in the online application instead of mailing a print. See the State Department's online renewal photo page and our online renewal guide.

  • US visitor, student or work visa (DS-160)

The photo is a digital image you upload in the online form. The State Department's photo FAQ says to bring one printed photo to the interview only if the upload failed.

  • DV lottery entry

One digital photo each for you, your spouse and every child on the entry. The last published instructions (DV-2026) required a square JPEG of 600 × 600 pixels, 240 kB or less, taken in the last 6 months, and warned that reusing a photo from a prior year's entry makes you ineligible. The DV-2027 instructions had not been published when we checked on October 23, 2026. More on our DV lottery photo page.

  • N-400 filed from inside the US

No photos go with the application. USCIS photographs you at your biometrics appointment and may use that photo on your Certificate of Naturalization. The N-400 instructions ask for two photos only from applicants residing outside the US, such as service members and their spouses, and USCIS may send you a request for physical photos after you file. See our naturalization photo requirements.

USCIS photo policy since December 12, 2025

USCIS announced that self-submitted photos will no longer be accepted for the documents it issues: only photos taken by USCIS or other authorized entities will be used, and the I-90, I-485, N-400 and N-600 require a new photo regardless of when your last one was taken. That rule is about the photo printed on your card or certificate. The I-485 instructions (edition 09/18/26) still list two printed photos as required evidence, so include them when you file.

Why Do You Need 2 Passport Photos for Some Forms?

Because the form's instructions say so. The official sources state the rule without giving a reason. USCIS asks for “two identical color passport-style photographs” on the I-485, I-765 and I-131, with your name and A-Number lightly printed on the back. Canada asks for “2 identical and unaltered photos” with each passport application, and the UK asks for 2 identical printed photos with a paper application (see our UK passport photo guide).

Read “identical” literally: two prints of the same photo, not two different shots. When a form asks for one photo, as the US passport forms do, send one.

How to Get Identical Copies

Make one photo, then print it as many times as your forms need.

  1. 1

    Take one photo

Stand in even light, face the camera with a neutral expression and follow your form's photo rules. Our tool crops the photo to 2 × 2 inches and gives it a plain white background.

  2. 2

    Download the HD file

The preview is free; the HD download is $9.99, one time. On the download page, pick the 2-photo layout to get two 2 × 2 inch copies on one 4 × 6 print.

  3. 3

    Print at actual size

Print the 4 × 6 at a pharmacy photo counter (about $0.35 per print) or at home. For USCIS forms use thin glossy photo paper; US passport forms accept matte or glossy. Turn off any fill or crop option, then measure one photo: it must be 2 × 2 inches.

  4. 4

    Cut and label

Cut along the photo edges. For USCIS forms, lightly print your name and A-Number (if any) on the back in pencil or felt pen.

We don't print or ship photos. For stores, prices and printer settings, see where to print 2×2 photos and our 4×6 passport photo template.

Canadian passports are the exception

Canada requires passport photos to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio and professionally printed, and it doesn't accept photos printed at home. An online photo maker, ours included, isn't the right tool here: go to a studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need 2 passport photos for a US passport?

No. A US passport application needs 1 photo. The DS-11 (new and child passports) and DS-82 (renewal by mail) instructions both say to attach one color photo, 2 × 2 inches, taken in the last 6 months and printed on matte or glossy photo paper. If you renew online, you upload a digital photo instead of mailing a print.

How many passport photos do I need for a green card application?

Two identical photos with Form I-485 (instructions edition 09/18/26). If you file an I-765 work permit and an I-131 travel document with it, each of those needs its own 2 identical photos too, so 6 in total. Separately, the photo on the card itself is one that USCIS or an authorized entity takes (USCIS photo policy of December 12, 2025).

Do I need photos for the N-400?

Not if you live in the US. The N-400 instructions (edition 01/20/25) ask for two identical photos only from applicants residing outside the United States, such as current members of the US armed forces and their spouses. Other applicants generally attend a biometrics appointment, where USCIS takes the photo it may use on the Certificate of Naturalization. USCIS says it may send you a request for physical photos after you file, with instructions on how to submit them.

How many passport photos do I need for a US passport renewal?

By mail with Form DS-82: 1 photo, 2 × 2 inches. The DS-82 instructions say to staple it with 4 staples placed vertically in the corners, as close to the outer edges as possible. Online renewal: no printed photo; you upload a digital one during the application.

Why do I need 2 passport photos for an IDP?

Because AAA, which issues International Driving Permits in the US, asks for two original passport photos when you apply in person or by mail (by mail, each signed on the back). AAA's page doesn't give a reason. If you apply online, you take a digital photo during the application instead, and AAA lists a $10 passport photo fee for that.

Can I use the same set of photos for my I-485 and I-765?

You can use copies of the same photo, but not the same two prints. Each form asks for its own two identical photos taken recently, so an I-485 and an I-765 filed together need 4 prints. Nothing in either form's instructions asks for a different photo per form.

How many photos do I need for a Canadian passport?

Two identical photos, 50 mm wide by 70 mm high, taken no more than 6 months before you apply. Canada requires them to be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio and professionally printed; it doesn't accept photos printed at home. For an online renewal, the photographer gives you a digital copy.

How many photos do I need for a US visa?

For a visitor, student or work visa (DS-160), none printed: you upload a digital image in the online form, and the State Department says to bring one printed photo to the interview only if the upload failed. For an immigrant visa (DS-260), bring 2 identical printed photos to the interview.

Checked against official sources on October 23, 2026. Requirements change, so read your form's current instructions before you print. We can't guarantee that an agency accepts a photo.
