What to Wear for a Passport Photo

The short answer: wear whatever you normally wear.

There is no dress code for passport photos. Any everyday clothing works. Two things to avoid: white tops (blend with the background) and uniforms (military, medical, occupational). Everything else is fine.

Why White Tops Are a Bad Idea

The passport photo background is white. When your shirt is white, the camera sees your torso as part of the background — it creates a "floating head" effect where the shoulders and neck area blend into the white background.

This doesn't automatically cause rejection, but it looks unusual and can attract attention during review. Some automated systems use shoulder-line detection as part of the face-framing crop — a white top makes this harder.

The fix is simple: wear literally any other color. Light blue, light grey, lavender — anything that creates a clear visual boundary between you and the background.

Specific Situations

I only own white shirts

Any contrast is better than none. A white shirt is allowed — it just isn't ideal. If you can borrow or buy a single inexpensive colored top, do so. Otherwise, proceed with white.

I want to look professional

A dark blazer over a white or light shirt looks excellent and is a classic choice for passport photos. The blazer provides contrast even if the shirt underneath is white.

I wear hijab or religious headwear

Fully permitted in all countries. The headwear itself provides contrast against the background. Clothing underneath follows the same rules as any other applicant.

I'm applying for a work visa

Business-casual or formal clothing is appropriate but not required. There is no rule that visa photos require formal dress. An everyday top is equally valid.

I have visible tattoos

Tattoos are not mentioned in passport photo requirements — they are not a reason for rejection. Visible tattoos on the neck or face are permitted.

I'm photographing a baby or young child

For infants, clothing color matters less because the crop is tight on the face. A colorful onesie is perfectly fine. Avoid white if possible, but don't stress about it for infants.

Warning

Uniforms are the most common clothing rejection reason. If you're active military, police, healthcare, or any uniformed profession — change into civilian clothes before your passport photo. Even partial uniforms (a uniform shirt with jeans) are not acceptable.

Note

Your passport is valid for 10 years. Wear clothing you'll be comfortable being identified in for a decade — nothing too trendy, nothing that dates badly. Classic, everyday clothing is the best choice.

FAQ

What should I wear for a passport photo?

Wear any everyday clothing you normally wear. There is no specific dress code for passport photos. You can wear a t-shirt, blouse, suit, casual top, or anything else you'd normally wear. The only clothing that's not allowed is uniforms (military, police, hospital), costumes, or anything that covers the face. Avoid white or very light shirts — they can blend with the white background.

Can I wear a white shirt in a passport photo?

It's allowed but not recommended. A white shirt against a white background makes it harder to distinguish your shoulders and collar from the background. This can cause the photo to look unusual or, in rare cases, attract a reviewer's attention. Wear a light grey, blue, or any other color instead. Dark colors photograph particularly well against a white background.

Is a collar required in a passport photo?

No. There is no requirement for a collar in US, UK, Canadian, or any passport photo. A t-shirt, crew neck, or collarless top is fully acceptable. The State Department does not specify any neckline or clothing type requirements.

Can I wear a suit and tie for my passport photo?

Yes — absolutely. A suit, blazer, or formal clothing is perfectly acceptable. Many people prefer formal clothing for their passport because they'll have it for 10 years. A dark blazer with a light or white shirt photographs well.

Can I wear a uniform in a passport photo?

No. Military, police, security, medical, and other occupational uniforms are not permitted. You must appear in civilian clothing. If you work in a uniformed profession, change before your passport photo.

Can I wear jewelry in a passport photo?

Yes. Jewelry including earrings, necklaces, piercings, and rings are all permitted. Facial piercings are also allowed — only eyewear (glasses) is restricted. Jewelry does not affect passport acceptance.

Can I wear a scarf or turtleneck in a passport photo?

Yes. Scarves, turtlenecks, and high necklines are fully acceptable, as long as they don't cover any part of the face. A scarf worn below the chin is fine. A scarf pulled up over the nose or chin is not allowed — the full face must be visible.

What colors photograph best against a white background?

Any color that isn't white or very near white creates good contrast against the white background. Navy, black, dark grey, burgundy, forest green, and most mid-tones all look excellent. Light pastels like pale yellow or light pink are fine but create less contrast. Bold colors like red, royal blue, and purple look striking in passport photos.
