Dominican Republic Passport Photo Requirements from the US

Foto de pasaporte — the Dominican Republic uses the same 2×2 inch format as the US. No special size needed. Here is what you need to know for renewal from the US.

Good news: Dominican passport photos are the same 2×2 inch size as US passport photos.

Unlike most other countries, you do not need a special size or an international photo center. Any US pharmacy — Walgreens, CVS, Walmart — can produce the correct 2×2 inch size. The main requirements to check: white background, neutral expression, no glasses.

Note

The Dominican Republic and the US share nearly identical passport photo standards. The most common reason Dominican-Americans have photos rejected at the consulate is the same as for US passports: shadows on the background, glasses, or a smiling expression. Treat it like a US passport photo and you will likely be fine.

Cédula de Identidad y Electoral — Same Photo Works

The Cédula de Identidad y Electoral is the Dominican national ID card issued by the JCE (Junta Central Electoral). Dominicans living abroad can apply for or renew their cédula through the same consulate network.

The cédula also uses a 2×2 inch white background photo — the same as the passport. If you are renewing both documents, one set of printed 2×2 inch photos covers both. Ask your consulate whether you can submit applications for both at the same appointment.

How to Renew a Dominican Passport from the US

1
Get your 2×2 inch passport photos

Since Dominican passport photos use the same 2×2 inch format as US photos, any pharmacy photo center can produce these. Get at least 2 printed copies. The background must be white, expression neutral, no glasses.

2
Gather your documents

Current or most recent Dominican passport (original), completed application form, 2 printed 2×2 inch photos, Dominican birth certificate or proof of citizenship (if first renewal), evidence of US address, and payment. Check with your specific consulate for the current fee in USD.

3
Contact your nearest Dominican consulate

Find your nearest consulate from the list below. Many Dominican consulates now accept appointments online or by phone. New York is the busiest — book several weeks ahead. Consulates in Providence, Philadelphia, and Orlando often have faster availability.

4
Submit your application in person

In-person visits are required for biometric enrollment. Bring originals and copies of all documents. The consulate will take your fingerprints and a digital photo (in addition to the printed photos you bring). Keep copies of everything you submit.

5
Receive your passport (4–8 weeks)

Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. Confirm with your consulate whether they mail the passport back to you or require in-person pickup. For urgent travel, contact the consulate before your appointment to ask about expedited options.

Dominican Republic Passport Photo FAQ

What size is a Dominican Republic passport photo?

Dominican Republic passport photos must be 2×2 inches (51×51mm) — the same size as US passport photos. This is good news for Dominican-Americans: unlike most other countries, you do not need a special size. Any US pharmacy (Walgreens, CVS, Walmart) can produce the correct size on demand. The background must be white, and your expression should be neutral.

Can I use a US passport photo for a Dominican passport?

Yes — Dominican Republic passport photos are the same 2×2 inch format as US passport photos. The size, white background, and most other requirements are identical. If you recently had a US passport photo taken that meets Dominican requirements (neutral expression, no glasses, white background, taken within 6 months), you may be able to use the same photos for your Dominican passport renewal.

Can I renew my Dominican passport from the US?

Yes. Dominican nationals in the US can renew at any Dominican consulate in the US. The Dominican Republic has one of the largest consular networks in the US, with locations in New York, Miami, Boston, Providence, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, and more. You can also begin or supplement your application at clave.gob.do for some document types.

What is the Cédula de Identidad and does it use the same photo?

The Cédula de Identidad y Electoral is the Dominican national identification card issued by the JCE (Junta Central Electoral). It also requires a 2×2 inch photo with a white background — the same format as the passport. If you are renewing both your cédula and passport, the same set of printed 2×2 inch photos will work for both documents, saving you from getting separate photos.

What are the full Dominican Republic passport photo requirements?

Full Dominican passport photo requirements from the Dirección General de Pasaportes: 2×2 inch size (51×51mm), white background (plain, no patterns or shadows), full color photo, frontal view with head centered and straight, neutral expression (mouth closed, no smiling), eyes open and looking at the camera, no glasses, no head coverings (except for documented religious reasons), face fills 70–80% of the frame, taken within the last 6 months, printed on standard photo paper.

Where are Dominican Republic consulates in the US?

The Dominican Republic has one of the largest US consular networks of any Caribbean country. Major locations include: New York City (Consulate General — Washington Heights/Inwood area), Miami, Boston, Providence RI, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando FL, Atlanta, Houston, and San Juan PR. The New York consulate serves the largest Dominican-American community in the US, concentrated in Washington Heights, the Bronx, and Queens.

How long does Dominican passport renewal take from the US?

Dominican passport renewal from a US consulate typically takes 4–8 weeks. Processing time varies by consulate volume — New York is the busiest and can have the longest waits. Some consulates in smaller cities process applications faster. Emergency passport issuance may be available for documented urgent travel needs — contact your consulate directly. New passports are typically sent to the embassy in Washington and then forwarded to the consulate for pickup or mail delivery.

Does the Dominican Republic allow glasses in passport photos?

No — glasses are not permitted in Dominican Republic passport photos. This is the same rule as for US passports. Remove all glasses (prescription and non-prescription) for your passport photo. Sunglasses or tinted glasses are also not permitted. This requirement was updated to align with international biometric standards and improve facial recognition accuracy.
