Can You Wear a Hijab in a Passport Photo?

The One Rule That Always Applies
Your full face must be clearly visible.
Every country that allows religious headwear applies the same condition: the face — from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and from one side to the other — must be fully visible, unobstructed, and without shadow.

How to Take the Photo Without Shadows
Shadows on the face are the most common reason a hijab-inclusive passport photo gets rejected. Here's how to eliminate them.
Stand with a window or lamp directly in front of you — not to the side. Front-facing light fills in any shadow from the hijab edge.
Overcast daylight through a window is ideal. Harsh direct sunlight creates strong shadows. Avoid single overhead lights that cast eye and chin shadows.
Move 2–3 feet from the background. This prevents your shadow from falling on the white background, keeping it clean and even.
If your hijab sits close to your forehead, make sure no shadow falls across the forehead skin. This area is often flagged by reviewers.
Zoom in on the photo on your phone before submitting. Check for any dark areas on the skin near the hijab edge, around the eyes, and under the chin.
Very white hijabs can sometimes make the face edge hard to define against the white background. A slightly coloured hijab (cream, light grey, or any colour) makes the face stand out more clearly.
Other Religious Headwear
The same rules that apply to hijabs apply to all forms of religious headwear.

FAQ
Can you wear a hijab in a US passport photo?
Yes. The US State Department explicitly permits religious head coverings including hijabs, turbans, kippot, and other religiously required headwear. The only requirement is that your full face must be clearly visible — from the hairline (or where the hairline would be) to the chin, and from ear to ear. No part of your face may be covered.
Does the hijab need to match the background color?
No. There is no color requirement for the hijab. However, if your hijab is white or very light, make sure there is still a visible distinction between the covering and the white background — the face must be clearly defined. Dark or any other color hijab is equally acceptable.
Can I wear niqab (face veil) in a passport photo?
No. A niqab that covers any part of the face — including the nose or mouth — is not permitted in passport photos. The requirement is that the full face must be visible. The niqab may be worn with the face uncovered for the photo, but the veil itself cannot be in front of the face in the submitted image.
Can I wear a hijab in a UK passport photo?
Yes. The UK Passport Office allows religious head coverings if: the face is clearly visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, both eyes are clearly visible, and no shadows fall across the face. The covering must not shade or obscure any part of the face.
Can I wear a hijab in a Canadian passport photo?
Yes. Passport Canada accepts photos with religious head coverings provided the full face is visible. The face must not be in shadow, and the covering must not obscure any facial features. The requirements are the same as the standard biometric photo requirements.
Can I wear a hijab in a Schengen visa photo?
Yes. Schengen visa photo requirements follow ICAO biometric standards, which permit religious headwear. Each embassy processes applications differently, but the general ICAO standard — full face visible, no shadows — applies across all Schengen member states.
What are the rules for the hijab in a passport photo?
The rules for any passport photo with a hijab are: (1) full face visible — chin to forehead, ear to ear; (2) both eyes clearly visible and open; (3) no shadows falling on the face from the covering; (4) white or off-white background (the covering must not blend into the background to the point where the face edge is indistinct); (5) neutral expression.
Will a passport office reject my photo because of a hijab?
Not if your face is fully visible. Rejection only happens if part of the face is covered, if there are shadows on the face caused by the headwear, or if the covering is so light in color that it blends with the background and obscures the face edge. If all requirements are met, a hijab is no different from any other part of the photo.
